From regulator to business: Jan Ziomek takes on FinTech within the New Technologies Sector

This is the next stage in the carefully planned and consistently implemented consolidation of Kochański & Partners. Following the Firm’s strategic actions in the areas of Global Transactions and International Finance, the time has come to complete the building of a comprehensive New Technologies Practice.

To this end, we invited Jan Ziomek to join the Firm, being an undisputed expert in the FinTech sector and one of the most experienced Polish practitioners in the field of new technologies and innovation. Jan is also a recognised international expert, able to combine technological know-how with knowledge of legislation and practical transactional solutions in this sector.

Technology pillar of Kochański & Partners

For the last 4 years, Jan Ziomek led the Innovation Development team in the FinTech Financial Innovation Department of the Financial Supervision Authority (KNF). He created and co-created legal solutions for the banking industry and legislative bridges enabling the implementation of innovations in the banking and financial sector, including in the area of capital markets.

Jan was responsible for, i.a., the work of the Financial Innovation Development Team, which identified and successfully removed barriers to the development of Polish FinTech. He worked on, developed and managed the Innovation Hub programme and has participated in international working groups focused on financial innovation, including those led by the European Securities and Markets Authority and the European Banking Authority.

He also led the work of a team developing the UKNF’s positions on issues such as the rules for investment crowdfunding platforms and those relating to the acquisition and trading of cryptoassets.

Jan also has extensive business expertise. He has advised Polish and foreign companies on payment services, investment crowdfunding, the use of DLT/Blockchain and cloud computing.

Jan gained experience in the legal and legislative team of the Polish Bank Association, where he was involved in the development of the regulatory framework for Polish innovation in the financial industry, including as a member of permanent and ad hoc working groups, including as chairman of the group dealing with FATCA/CRS tax reporting standards.

“The joining of an expert of the calibre, such as  Jan undoubtedly is, to our team, should be seen as a further signal to the market that we intend to be the first choice firm for new technologies and innovation, including FinTech. Accordingly, together with my Partners, and of course Jan, we are recruiting the best in the market. We will also be working with our clients from the NewTech Market, including companies from the MedTech, FoodTech, RealTech,  and others from the Global Advanced Industries & Services sectors. We want to address their needs arising from their projects such as those in the field of Tech M&A, and approach it in as comprehensive and multidisciplinary a way as possible” – emphasises Piotr Kochański, Managing Partner and Head of the Firm’s NewTech Sector Group.

New Technologies can be a real rollercoaster, where everything happens in real time. That’s why we need people who are competent, don’t waste your time and know how to turn our client opportunities, challenges and even problems into successes. By creating and using advisory know-how for New Technologies, we want to change the world for the better for everyone” – he adds with conviction.

A technological leap into hyperspace

The entry into FinTech will be strong and precise.

Hence the detailed plan and the carefully selected, ever-growing areas:

  • MiCA and the broad field of cryptocurrency transactions
  • Payment services, including regulations, habits, market experience and specific needs
  • Systemic and professional anti-money laundering in companies and financial institutions
  • DORA – the Digital Operational Resilience Act
  • Cyber Security and its ever-changing and challenging environment
  • Technology transactions and global finance

Precise and highly specialised profiling is also announced by the new head of the FinTech team.

“I intend to make effective use of the knowledge and experience gained at the UKNF and combine this with the potential of the Firm’s Team. Thanks to this, we will not only be able to create technologically advanced solutions, but also truly shape the future of the Polish FinTech sector. Here the sky is the limit” – says Jan Ziomek.
