We are building Poland’s energy future, which is why we have been named Highly Commended at The Lawyer European Awards 2025

The war in Ukraine has forced Europe to embark on an energy revolution. Until recently, nuclear energy was viewed with considerable scepticism, but it has now become one of the most important elements of security and a pillar of transformation across the continent. The construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant is now recognised as being of key importance to Poland and the EU in ensuring secure energy supplies at stable, predictable prices.

The energy transition is an unprecedented opportunity that comes once in a generation. It offers a significant opportunity for dynamic development and represents a significant leap forward for many sectors of the economy and Polish businesses. Thanks to green energy from nuclear power and renewable energy sources, it is an opportunity for millions of people to live longer and healthier lives. And in the long term, this will be a real opportunity for the environment and nature to take a deep, fresh breath. We all deserve it.

In Poland, an additional component has emerged that is now particularly important. In the context of changing global geopolitics, the concepts of ‘Local First’ and ‘repolonisation’ of the economy are gaining significance. The involvement of Polish companies in public procurement and large-scale investment is now seen as a patriotic duty and in the national interest.

The Polish Nuclear Power Plant project aligns perfectly with this philosophy. As a nation, we are establishing our energy security based on clean, stable nuclear power, thereby contributing to the decarbonisation of the energy sector. As we have been advising on this transition project since 2022, our expertise has already been recognised and appreciated on the international stage. For example, we have been recognised as Highly Commended in the European Energy Transition of the Year category at this year’s The Lawyer European Awards 2025.

The role of lawyers and advisors in building the future and security of the energy sector

The construction of a nuclear power plant carries significant social and political responsibility. This requires advisers to be precise, flexible, and able to engage in dialogue with stakeholders with diverse expectations. Our experience in the nuclear energy sector extends well beyond regulations. We have a deep understanding of technology, global financing, large infrastructure projects and the economic and political context.

The investment process requires numerous administrative permits, including environmental and siting decisions, as well as a building permit issued by the President of the National Atomic Energy Agency. Furthermore, the project must comply with national, EU and international regulations, including nuclear energy treaties.

This also requires a comprehensive legal approach that takes into account the specific nature of the nuclear sector and the involvement of many public and private institutions. We are among the few experts in this field and our expertise is highly regarded.

For us, the energy transition is more than just a slogan; it is a real process that is transforming the Polish economy. We are moving away from coal and shifting our focus to renewable and nuclear energy sources. This requires sensible, consistent planning and effective implementation. We are proud that, together with Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe, we are changing the world for the better. We are doing so in the spirit of ‘Local First’, taking care of Poland’s future in every respect: energy-wise, economically and socially. And demonstrating that we already have the necessary expertise, the ability to innovate and the effectiveness to manage such complex legal processes, emphasises Piotr Kochański.

The architects of the legal future of energy

From a lawyer’s perspective, no other energy investment is subject to such rigorous regulation, including national, EU and international requirements. Recognition from The Lawyer acknowledges  the goals we have already achieved and motivates us to take further action. It also confirms that our work has a real impact on global challenges.

In recent years, we have learnt the hard way that security and stability are not abstract concepts or values that can be guaranteed once and for all. In a world where the truth about the future of energy is sometimes under attack from all sides, someone has to stand up for it. And that is our job.

We see climate change as the most pressing challenge of our time. We will therefore continue to support those with the courage to change the world for the better, believing that the future and security of the energy sector are in our hands.

We are ready for new challenges. We are ready to build.
