Crypto, NFT and the Metaverse are the hottest topics in the world of technology and business
Where there is a hot topic, there is also a tax challenge. So what do we already know about this? And where does Poland fit into the puzzle?
Autumn 2022 has brought a strong cooling in the crypto market, which however remains a huge and very lucrative piece of cake. It is worth mentioning that as recently as November 2021, the cryptocurrency market had reached its highest ever levels, valued at almost USD 3 trillion.
No doubt this has already come to the attention of lawmakers, who are looking for ways to tax crypto market transactions. After all, as Benjamin Franklin wrote, “in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes”.
What is Poland’s idea of taxing crypto assets
At the moment, we are in an impasse. Polish regulations on the taxation of cryptocurrencies, NFTs, Metaverse and the existing practices of the tax authorities are mediocre, to say the least, compared to the rest of the world.
However, the situation cannot last, and so the question is what will the Polish lawmakers do in the near future? Will they, following the example of Germany, Estonia and Malta, simplify regulations in order to keep domestic cryptocurrency and NFT investors at home while encouraging foreign investors to enter the Polish market?
Or, instead, will they tighten regulations – or even do nothing at all, thus leaving uncertainties which may translate into long and costly tax disputes in administrative courts.
Extensive report on cryptocurrency, NFT and Metaverse taxation rules
We have prepared the most systemic report presenting the cryptocurrency, NFT and Metaverse taxation rules in Poland.
The report answers questions including:
- What does the taxation of cryptocurrencies across the world look like?
- How to account for crypto profits in Poland?
- How to tax cryptocurrency exchanges and bureaux de change?
- Is trading in virtual currencies subject to VAT?
- How to tax disposal of NFTs under Polish tax law?
- What tax will NFT creators pay?
- Should the Metaverse be taxed and, if yes, how?
- What direction should the Polish legislator take?
Following the presentation of the report, join us at a panel discussion involving the report authors, representatives of the business and tech communities and the Ministry of Finance.
